East Asia - Bitcoin (BTC) remains stable, trading above Rp 1.38 miliar ($84K) as East Asian markets open for the week. The White House has presented mixed messages regarding semiconductor and technology component tariffs, causing market fluctuations. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick mentioned that the exemption of items like smartphones and semiconductors from tariffs is temporary, while President Trump stated that the tariff rate would be announced next week with some flexibility.
Despite Trump's comments about moving items to another tariff bucket, markets held their gains. China has announced its own tariffs on U.S.-origin semiconductors, hitting them with a 34% tariff. However, since most U.S. chip companies rely on Taiwan's TSMC for fabrication, they would be effectively exempt from these tariffs. Analysts in China see this as an opportunity to boost domestic innovation and supply-chain restructuring.
In other news, Hong Kong's Bosera HashKey Ether ETF has been approved to offer staking services. Despite this, ether ETFs have not performed well, with the best-performing ones being those that are short ether ETFs. Ether has seen a significant drop of 47% over the last year, while the CoinDesk 20 is up 14%.
